The numbers that decide a fence
Six figures from the Building Regulations, the planning schemes and the Fences Act. Your property report says which overlays are yours.
- 2 m
- The tallest fence with no building permit. Not for pool barriers. Fence permits
- 1.5 m
- Within 3 m of a street, or 1.2 m in masonry, and 1 m near a corner. Some councils set lower front fences.
- 1.8 m
- Yarra Ranges' landscape overlays. In the ranges, the overlays require a permit for a fence unless it is under 1.8 m and more than 75% see-through.
- 4 m
- Clearing along a boundary fence, both sides together, without a planning permit, when the conditions fit. Clearing a fence line
- 50/50
- A sufficient dividing fence is shared equally; a better one is paid for by whoever wants it. Dividing fences
- 30 days
- For a neighbour to answer a fencing notice before the work can go ahead without them.
