Fencing in Tremont

In Tremont the neighbour over the back fence is often the national park, and the park doesn't pay half.

A fence against the national park

Almost all of Tremont is Dandenong Ranges National Park, and only 69 people lived here at the 2021 census, so many of the private blocks back onto the park. The Crown doesn't contribute to a fence on unalienated Crown land, so that side is fenced at the owner's cost. Where the neighbour is another house, the Fences Act's half-each rule applies; dividing fences explains it.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Wikipedia: Tremont, Victoria, Vicmap Planning, the state's zone and overlay maps (DataVic), measured across the suburb and Fences Act 1968 (Vic), authorised version 072.

Two overlays on nearly every block

The private land is under SLO1, which needs a planning permit for any fence unless it is under 1.8 m and more than 75% see-through. ESO1 covers almost the whole locality as well, and its fence wording is ambiguous, so ask Yarra Ranges planning before choosing a design.

The Bushfire Management Overlay covers everything too. Beside a boundary fence built before 10 September 2009, vegetation can be cleared 4 m wide, both sides together, without a planning permit. Clearing a fence line has the conditions.

Check your overlays on a free VicPlan report.

Out of the park

Ferny Creek and Sassafras
SLO1 again, the same test for every fence.
Upwey
SLO22, which asks only about front fences.
The Basin, Ferntree Gully and Upper Ferntree Gully
Mostly Knox, where front fences in Neighbourhood Residential streets stop at 1.2 m without a building permit, or 2 m on a Transport Zone 2 road.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedules to Clause 42.03 (SLO1–6, SLO22, SLO23) and Knox Planning Scheme, Clause 32.09 schedules (front fence height).

What's the job?

How long the fence is, what it's made of now, whether the ground slopes, and whether a neighbour shares it.

A photo along the fence line and one of the worst part help with the quote.
