Fencing in Kilsyth South

Kilsyth South is in Maroondah, which sets lower front fences than Knox or Yarra Ranges next door: 0.9 m on most residential streets.

Maroondah's low front fences

Kilsyth South is entirely in Maroondah, and its houses are mostly in the General Residential Zone. Maroondah's schedule for that zone keeps front fences low: 0.9 m on an ordinary street, 1.2 m on a main road zoned Transport Zone 2. That height applies within 3 m of the street even where no building permit is needed. Side and back fences up to 2 m don't need a building permit.

Landscape and vegetation overlays cover much of the suburb, but Maroondah's schedules for them say nothing about fences, and the state's rules exempt a fence from the scheme's building and works permits unless the scheme asks for one. Clearing vegetation for a new fence line is a separate question. Your property report lists the overlays on your lot.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Vicmap Planning, the state's zone and overlay maps (DataVic), measured across the suburb, Maroondah Planning Scheme, Clause 32.09 schedules (front fence height), Building Regulations 2018 (Vic), authorised version 031, Maroondah Planning Scheme, schedules to Clauses 42.02, 42.03 and 43.02 and Victoria Planning Provisions, Clause 62.02 (buildings and works).

Green wedge and the spider orchid

Nearly half of Kilsyth South is green wedge, and its bushland is the only place the Kilsyth South Spider Orchid is known to grow. Where a farm meets a house block, the Fences Act's sufficient fence is the farm standard, usually post and wire. The state's Land for Wildlife note says gliders and birds get caught on barbed wire and suggests plain wire where it will do. Farm fencing has the barbed wire rules.

Pool fences

Maroondah asks for a pool or spa barrier to be certified every four years by a registered building surveyor or building inspector. Pool fencing covers registration.
